Central Lincoln County is an open, serene landscape of gently rolling dryland wheat farms. But down the middle it is ripped open by what is known as the Telford tract of the channeled scablands, where flood waters peeled back the loess and, in places, left layers of basalt pillars arranged like so many choirs of rocks. It also left behind several lakes and maze-like dry channels. I’d walked over an hour, on an icy road bordered with deep snow, to this spot, on a lake, where this beautiful tree resides.
