One of my favorite scabland ponds is along a back road to Sprague. I climb under a barbed wire fence and sit patiently in the reeds with my camera. I’m hardly an expert at this, but I think the key is to relax, and try to make everything around me feel relaxed. Most times that doesn’t work at all, neither with people in my real life, nor with the coots, songbirds, and beavers that frequent this small body of water beneath a shelf of rimrock. But this is what it looks like when the water falls asleep.
