Twenty three years ago, Bill Mitchell was in Spokane the day after my daughter Audrey was born. There is a wonderful picture of him holding her that just warms our hearts. If it hadn’t been for Bill, I would likely never have met Audrey’s mom. Apart from that, Bill was a quiet hero to many environmental and progressive organizations all over the country, but especially in the West. To his funeral on Vashon Island, in August of 2016, people came from hundreds and even thousands of miles to overflow the hall. The tearful remembrances went on for two hours, so it was getting late when I left and took this ethereal photograph outside the hall, capturing both the sorrow of his passing and the hope he inspired in so many lives.
